In today’s online world, identity theft can happen to anyone—but a few smart habits can help keep your information safe.

Know the Risks

Nearly 30% of Americans experience some form of identity theft each year, from fraudulent card charges to fake loan applications. The best defense is awareness and action.

Protect Your Accounts

  • Use credit cards instead of debit cards when possible—most offer zero-liability protection.

  • Review your statements regularly and report unauthorized charges immediately.

  • Choose unique PINs and never write them down.

  • Shred old receipts, bills, and account information before discarding them.

Stay Secure Online

Before shopping or entering personal information, look for a lock symbol and “https” in the website address—signs the site is secure. Avoid clicking suspicious links or responding to pushy offers that ask for personal data.

Beware of Telemarketing Traps

Scammers often pose as familiar companies or government agencies. Never share your Social Security number, bank account, or credit card details over the phone unless you initiated the call.

If you believe your information has been compromised, visit IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps and report scams to the FTC at 1-877-FTC-HELP.

At First Federal Credit Union, your security is our priority. Stay informed, stay cautious, and help stop fraud before it starts.
