Tax season is here, and it’s a great opportunity to make sure you’re getting the most from your refund—while keeping it safe.

Free or Trusted Tax Preparation

Some members may qualify for free tax-preparation assistance through IRS programs like Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE). These programs can also help identify valuable credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), that may increase your refund.

If free services aren’t an option, choose a trusted tax professional. Be cautious of anyone who promises unusually large refunds, claims special “insider” knowledge, or contacts you unexpectedly.

Get Your Refund Faster

Direct deposit is the fastest and most secure way to receive your refund—often within 10–21 days after filing electronically. You can even split your refund into multiple accounts to save, spend, or pay bills more easily.

Prepaid cards are another option, but be sure to understand any fees, limits, or protections before choosing this route.

Protect Yourself from Scams

The IRS will never contact you by phone, email, or text asking for personal or financial information. If a message feels urgent or pressures you to act quickly, pause—it may be a scam.

Put Your Refund to Work

Consider using your refund to build savings, pay down high-interest debt, or make an extra mortgage payment. Small steps today can lead to stronger financial security tomorrow.
